LUXXO TRAVEL GUIDE: Amalfi Coast

Written by Timmy Coles-Liddle

A speedy one- and a half-hour transfer along the picturesque coastal road from Naples airport to Marciano, near Sorrento, hidden away in the steep lemon grove terraces, stands Villa del Rivo.  The nine-bedroom villa commands extraordinary panoramic views to the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procita, and the Bay of Naples.  A prefect base to explore the extraordinary coast line.

Charter a yacht from nearby Sorrento and discover the breathtakingly transparent waters of grotta azzurra and grotto verde at the foot of the dramatic cliffs surrounding Capri.  We opted for a sleek power boat and moored at Marina Piccola, Capri, where we whizzed up to the quaint Piazzetta via the funicolare.  Locals and regulars opt for lemon risotto and lobster at the century-old Ristorante Faraglioni on Via Camerelle (faraglioni.com).  Le Camerelle is also a hot spot, offering a wide choice of locally caught seafood and fish.  Enjoy an early evening Aperol spritz under the elegant cream canopy and watch the international jet set stroll past.

Stay at the opulent Quisisana and relax by the pool overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean sea.  Classic Italian furnishings blend seamlessly with a fresh, contemporary vibe.  Just make sure you don’t miss the extravagant breakfast buffet at Il Quisi! (quisisana.com).  Hotel Punta Tragara boasts Capri’s most enchanting vista of the Faraglioni cliffs, together with a luxe spa and exquisite, modern interiors.  For the ultimate in Med chic, we recommend the 90 msq. penthouse suite with surreal interiors and super private roof terrace (hoteltragara.com).

Soak up the sun at La Canzone del Mare, a chic, all-day beach lounge and restaurant.  Guests can either take a dip in the swimming pool or cool off in the crystal waters of the private beach (lacanzonedelmare.com).

Whizz over to the exclusive La Conca del Sogno at Nerano, which can only be accessed by water, and let their private dingy transport you to the shore.  Those in the know go for prawns and lobster washed down with a crisp Falanghina.  Why not round off the day with a cocktail at the beach club?  (concadelsogno.it).

Monastero Santa Rosa, perched atop the cliffs near the pretty town of Amalfi, is a destination luxury hotel and spa, thrilling guests with the extraordinary location, fine dining and expanse of manicured terraces overlooking the pool and deep blue sea beyond.  Pop in for lunch and enjoy a carefully curated menu by distinguished chef Christoph Bob (monasterosantarosa.com).

Day trips to Positano and Sorrento are obligatory.  Pop in to La Taverna del Duca, located in a pretty shaded courtyard in Positano, for culinary treats such as buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomatoes, and cod lingune (amalfilatavernadelduca.it).  Palazzo Marziale, Sorrento, is a delightful historic mansion.  The charming tree-lined terrace offers traditional culinary flavours in a serene environment.  Bright, spacious bedrooms have been thoughtfully decorated with bright upholstery and antiques (palazzomarziale.com).
