MINDFUL TRAVEL SERIES: SLOW AFRICA ODYSSEY

Written by Graeme Winchester

To celebrate 2021, ‘the year of sustainability’, the team at NINE have designed a curious and ethically responsible 21-night flying safari across sub-Saharan Africa – Kenya, Rwanda, Namibia, Madagascar - driven by biodiversity, sustainability and community sprit. A once-in-a-lifetime journey for the exceptionally intrepid traveller, guests on this bespoke trip will enjoy a host of carefully crafted experiences which champion local expertise and knowledge, focusing on engagement, sustainability and protection of indigenous traditions, whilst flying with our carbon-neutral charter partner and staying at a clutch of the continent’s most outstanding eco-lodges.

Explore four remarkably unique countries, knowing your footprint will leave the land a better place. Enjoy world-class dining prepared by chefs focusing on seasonal, locally sourced produce at a collection of hand-selected lodges championing native craftsmanship, and likeminded eco-principles such as eliminating single-use plastics, composting organic waste and green energy, and pioneering investment in local communities and charitable initiatives. Experiences include black rhino tracking in Namibia's Zannier Reserve, dining with Southern Kenya's Maasai and learning how their fascinating culture remains relevant in today's world, and trekking the remarkable, once-endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park with a lead primatologist.

Timmy Coles-Liddle, founder at NINE, comments: “now is a unique opportunity in history to collectively transform and evolve our travel habits and to create a new tourism landscape. Continents like Africa are being desperately affected by the pandemic and holidays and safaris in future must look to tread more delicately, consciously exploring new lands and sensitively engaging with communities. With this in mind, we’ve painstakingly scoured the continent and pulled together the most brilliant ecologically-minded lodges and partners who must be congratulated for their hero-worthy endeavours, protecting the very things we travel to Africa for”.

All carbon dioxide output is offset by contributing to various reforestation initiatives in Africa. Details available upon request. The journey price includes a 2% donation to Gorilla Doctors. NINE supports Green Future Project's reforestation initiatives in Madagascar and Ecuador.

NINE is offering 21 nights’ full-board accommodation in luxury eco-lodges, daily one-of-a-kind curated experiences, two daily game drives, all private air travel and transfers, and all permits and taxes, from about USD$58,000 per person, based on double occupancy, for eight travellers.
